Wysing Arts Centre programme of artists residencies. Cambridge
Wysing Arts Centre is one of Europe’s leading centres for research and development in the visual arts, based on an inspiring rural site outside Cambridge. Through Wysing Arts Studios, we are inviting visual artists and creative initiatives; graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, artists' collectives and architects to occupy our purpose built studios on a subsidised or partly subsidised basis.
Wysing has up to 30 artists working on the site at any one time and operates a year-round programme of public events and exhibitions. There is a communal kitchen open during the day where staff and artists can meet up to take a break, have meetings, eat, drink or just chat. And there is ample parking. Facilities on site include a media suite, ceramics workshop, wi-fi a Grade II listed farmhouse, all set within a large rural environment. Artist Simon Woolham, currently working in studios at Wysing says, “Working here has been fantastic not only because of the great facilities but also because of the atmosphere of collaboration and communication. I’ve met other like-minded artists with whom I can potentially develop my work in future”.
Wysing has a number of studios, varying in size and cost. We have four application strands:
1. Subsidised studios for emerging and early career visual artists and creative initiatives. We are interested in applications from artists, self organised groups, artists’ collectives, graphic designers, illustrators, photographers and architects who are emerging and need extra support with subsidised spaces. Fully subsidised studio artists have access to two mentoring sessions per year with Wysing curatorial staff and are able to occupy studios for up to five years.
2. Part-subsidised studios offer space to mid career and established visual artists, designers and creative initiatives no longer in need of heavily subsidised studios. Creatives can hire studios on a short or long term basis and be part of an exciting community of national and international artists. Benefits include access to a programme of exhibitions, events and projects, informal peer support and a lively and supportive network of artists and arts professionals.
3. The unique live/work studio is also available during 2012 for one to six months. The studio is located on the ground floor of our RIBA award-winning purpose built studio building and measures 48m square. It is north facing with three full height (3m) windows, with wireless internet connection, central heating, a kitchen, a shower room and is furnished.
4. Wysing is seeking a Live-in Caretaker responsible for the daily security of the site and buildings and being Wysing Arts Centre’s representative out of office hours. This position would suit an artist seeking to subsidise their income and looking for an inspiring workplace. This unique opportunity is available from July 2012 and the deadline for applications is 17 February 2012
